Welcome to the Bridge Program…

I am a Bridge learner!

I am five! I have big ideas, endless questions, and a growing understanding of how the world works. I am eager to learn, ready for new challenges, and proud of what I can do on my own.

But that doesn't mean I need to rush! I still learn best through play, exploration, and hands-on discovery. I need time to investigate my ideas, work through challenges, and develop the patience to keep trying. I am strengthening the skills that will help me become a confident reader, writer, and problem-solver, while learning to manage my emotions, navigate friendships, and take responsibility.

When I get to kindergarten, I'll be ready—not just to keep up, but to thrive.

What Learning Looks Like in Bridge

Bridge follows the same child-led approach that guides every Zimmer classroom. Our teachers observe, listen, and thoughtfully design environments and investigations that meet each child where they are — and then stretch them a little further.

  • Confidence and self-regulation. Children practice naming feelings, calming their bodies, working through disagreements, and persisting through challenge. Emotional well-being is not separate from learning; it is the foundation of it.

  • Focus and stamina. More involved project work, small-group lessons, and meaningful responsibilities strengthen the  attention, concentration, and endurance a kindergarten day requires.

  • Language and early literacy. Rich conversation, storytelling, phonological awareness, letter-sound exploration, and early writing build the foundations for reading and written expression.

  • Mathematical thinking. Counting, quantity, patterning, measuring, sorting, and problem-solving are woven into building, cooking, games, and investigations.

  • Fine and gross motor strength. Clay, wire, scissors, tweezers, drawing, and real tools build motor control, while daily outdoor play, climbing, and movement strengthen coordination and body awareness.

  • Independence and executive function. Children plan projects, organize their materials and belongings, follow multi-step routines, and take responsibility for their classroom community.

  • Jewish life and values. Shabbat, holidays, brachot, and middot like kindness, gratitude, and responsibility are lived every day, helping each child grow into a true mensch.

  • Nature and the arts. Time outdoors and open-ended work with real art materials give children space to wonder, create, and express themselves in "a hundred languages."

Why a Bridge Year?

At Zimmer, we see each child as b’tzelem Elokim — created in the image of God, inherently capable, and growing at their own pace. Kindergarten readiness is much more than knowing letters and numbers. It's about stamina, independence, self-regulation, confidence, and the social and emotional skills needed to thrive in a  larger, more structured learning environment.

Five-year-olds are at a remarkable stage of development. Their curiosity is expanding, their thinking is becoming more sophisticated, and they are eager for new challenges. Yet they still benefit enormously from the exploration, creativity, and hands-on discovery that define early childhood learning.

For some children, particularly those with late spring or summer birthdays, an additional year offers the opportunity to enter kindergarten with greater maturity and confidence. For others, it provides valuable time to deepen emerging skills, strengthen friendships, and develop greater independence.

A Bridge Year isn't about holding children back. It's about giving them the opportunity to move forward in ways that honor their development—building a foundation that will serve them well beyond kindergarten.
